Green Concoctions: Deodorant
A few years ago I became super vigilant about looking at labels, scanning the ingredient list for some of the big offenders. I wanted to avoid parabens, synthetic fragrances, propylene glycol, dyes, 1-4 dioxane, petroleum based ingredients, and--most recently--nanoparticles. Nanoparticles are chemical packets small enough to enter our circulatory system routinely used in sunscreens, cosmetic and as ‘absorption enhancers” in a wide range of other consumer products, such as deodorants. Read more about hazards in our skincare products.
There are some products I am just not willing to do without, however. Deodorant is one of these, so I experimented with making my own.
Deodorant Recipe
There are some easy recipes out there, try one or two and see what works. A friend (who always smells delightful to me) swears by baking soda. Apply as a powder or mix with water and spray on. The recipe I’ve used with great success is simple and easy to make. I make a quick mix of half water and half white vinegar, add a few drops of tea tree oil and spray it on.
- ½ cup filtered water
- ½ cup white vinegar
- 15 drops of tea tree oil
Combine, shake and spray. This last me 3 – 4 weeks.
During the winter I make sure to keep my skin hydrated, including my armpits. A drop or two of olive oil after a shower keeps my skin skin soft and supple.
